Editorial

Dissa

I would like to extend our sincere apologies to our readers for LINKnet not managing to produce its regular newsletter for a long time due to staff changes. In this issue I intend to highlight some of LINKnet’s achievements during the year from 01 November 07 to 31 Oct 2008.
Our core mentoring service has helped 31 minority ethnic people into employment and 21 ME people into further/higher education during the year while many others have received help and information on their personal development.
Our ‘International Alliance’ project succeeded in getting funding extended to a second year. The project has so far attended to 20 international students in their pursuit of employment in Scotland
The European project ‘Exchange in Good Practice in Skill Development’ has completed the targeted three seminars in Edinburgh, Spain and Greece and has moved into the second year for the completion of its intended activities.

Our resource centre is being used by more and more individuals and organisations

space

The landmark achievement for the year is the establishment of the political mentoring project. The project was launched to the public on 29 October 2008 at Edinburgh First with the participation of about 200 people. Six MSPs including the Minister for Communities and two Councillors from the City of Edinburgh council attended the launch. The project has recruited nine MSPs and three Councillors as mentors to help 12 people from disadvantaged groups of society to become future leaders.  I believe that LINKnet have laid the historic foundation to change the political landscape of Scotland. You can read the full report of the launch on the link bellow.

International Alliance

International Alliance

International Alliance is LINKnet's recent joint project with Napier University and indeed the first funded joint project between a University and a ME organisation in Edinburgh. Through this project the two organisations aim to encourage Scottish Businesses to expand to other countries with advice and participation from overseas students studying at Napier University. Students who are interested in participating in the Scottish Government’s Fresh Talent Initiative will be encouraged to take placements with Scottish Businesses with the expectation of obtaining paid employment.
LINKnet mentors will support them while on placement. The participants of the project will benefit by getting work experience in Scotland and an income. The Businesses will benefit from the experience and the expertise of the students.

The project is funded by The Scottish Government’s “Fresh Talent: Supporting International Students Challenge Fund”.

Exchange of Good Practice in Skill Development is a partnership project between Scotland, Spain and Greece.
The purpose of the project is for the partners to learn skill development techniques practiced in each partner country and explore the possibility of emulating them.
Exchange of Good Practice in Skills Development project is a partnership scheme between Scotland, Spain and Greece to explore different skill development methods used in each country. The partnership project enables participating organisations to learn from each other. Each participant organisation will benefit by learning new methods that are used and popular in the countries of the partners. New skill development methods that have been exchanged will be appropriately applied in the country of residence of the participants. The first partnership seminar was held from 26th to 30th of March 2008 in Edinburgh with the participation of 17 people including Spanish and Greek visitors.

Political Mentoring Project

LINKnet devised its political mentoring project to address the issue of the under representation of people from disadvantaged groups in civic life of Scotland. The Equality and Human Rights Commission made a grant to LINKnet to initiate the process. By the end of August 2008 LINKnet had managed to recruit 11 participants from various disadvantaged groups to become future leaders.

A sufficient number of MSPs and Councillors came forward to offer their voluntary service to mentor those participants in order to develop their leadership careers. Mentoring is defined as the exchange of knowledge and experience between a more experienced person and a less experienced person on a certain field. LINKnet’s political mentors will work with their mentees until the end of March 2009 to guide them towards the path to political leadership. LINKnet will provide necessary support structures in this process and also a complementary educational training programme to enhance relevant knowledge of the participants of this programme. LINKnet wish to continue the project into the future
.

LINKnet' s CASE STUDIES

Mentee-1

Matched in December 2007, matched closed June 2008
At first Linknet mentoring did not mean much to me, I was busy thinking of my last chance at high school and my objective to get a place at University. In fifth year I wanted to combine passing 4 Highers with my all time hobby. Unfortunately I had to learn things the hard way especially as my mother went away for a holiday. It was not impossible, all I needed was a mentor. Someone to be there for me, keeping me right all the time and give me that extra hand that would make the difference. In sixth year I had though that I knew all the tricks in the book and was raging to get things right. I accepted mentoring as a safety net, and it turned out it was my only chance through. My mentor helped me manage my time, made sure I knew what was happening in situations like writing my personal statement and what was going to happen if I tried to get my own house. He played a big part in passing a vital higher exam by helping me when my teacher couldn't’t. Now it’s a big relief it’s all over, and would like to thank my mentor for all the trouble he had to go through.

Mentee-2

I am an Engineer in automatics, and computer programmer in my home country of Cuba.
My mentor and I have been meeting since February and we have worked on my CV and mock interviews, as well as how look for a job on the internet.
I'm still working as freelancer in Web designing and I'll enroll in a course about repairing computers in Jewel and Esk. I've found a course in English conversation too, although I think I've improved my listening and speaking.
I know how to manage in interviews (although I can't control my nerves yet!) and I've learned the different ways to look for a job. I have applied for two courses NC in computing (Adult Learning); one in Information Technology and the other one is an intensive, vocational course which could give me a recognized qualification for work as a computer technician. Both are free of charge and both requiring my previous qualifications.

LINKnet is a big family and I appreciate every help and support you have give to me during all this time. Thanks a lot. I recommend to everyone from the ethnic and minority community who is confused about his or her future in this country and who is "lost in translation" in some way, go to Linknet for advise and support

Mentee-3

I first heard about LINKnet through a friend, then when I approached them they were very friendly and sympathetic with me and I explained my situation at the time. My mentor was very friendly and gave me all the confidence to get the job.
I always wanted to work in an office environment because before I came to Edinburgh I was a secretary but each time I went for interview I never managed to secure the job because of language barriers. We started to meet once a week and had several discussions about my career, long term goals, barriers to reach these goals and methods to approach my difficulties. She encouraged me to apply for jobs and had several mock interviews until recently when I managed to secure a permanent position.

I would like to thank my mentor and LINKnet for its services especially to Linda, for all her dedication and support when I was unemployed.

My Regards

USEFUL INFORMATION

Arrow 10 things you can teach kids to improve their Web Safety

Before you allow your child to go online without your supervision, make sure you establish a set of rules that you can all agree on.

If you're not sure where to start, here are some ideas on what to discuss with your kids to teach them about using the Internet more safely.

1.

Encourage your kids to share their Internet experiences with you. Enjoy the Internet along with your children.

2.

Teach your kids to trust their instincts. If they feel nervous about anything online, they should tell you about it.

3.

If your kids visit chat rooms, use instant messaging (IM) programs, online video games, or other activities on the Internet that require a login name to identify themselves, help them choose that name and make sure it doesn't reveal any personal information about them.

4.

Insist that your kids never give out your address, phone number, or other personal information, including where they go to school or where they like to play.

5.

Teach your kids that the difference between right and wrong is the same on the Internet as it is in real life.

6.

Show your kids how to respect others online. Make sure they know that rules for good behavior don't change just because they're on a computer.

7.

Insist that your kids respect the property of others online. Explain that making illegal copies of other people's work—music, video games, and other programs—is just like stealing it from a store.

8.

Tell your kids that they should never meet online friends in person. Explain that online friends may not be who they say they are.

9.

Teach your kids that not everything they read or see online is true. Encourage them to ask you if they're not sure.

10.

Control your children's online activity with advanced Internet software. Parental controls can help you filter out harmful content, monitor the sites your child visits, and find out what they do there.

ArrowSafety tips for using a public computer

Don't save your logon information. Always log out of Web sites by clicking "log out" on the site. It's not enough to simply close the browser window or type in another address.

Many programs (especially instant messenger programs) include automatic login features that will save your user name and password. Disable this option so no one can log in as you.

Don't leave the computer unattended with sensitive information on the screen. If you have to leave the public computer, log out of all programs and close all windows that might display sensitive information.

Erase your tracks. Web browsers such as Internet Explorer keep a record of your passwords and every page you visit, even after you’ve closed them and logged out.

To disable the feature that stores passwords

Before you go to the Web, turn off the Internet Explorer feature that "remembers" your passwords.

1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.

2. Click the Content tab, and then click AutoComplete.

3. Click to clear both check boxes having to do with passwords.

To delete your temporary Internet files and your history

When you finish your use of a public computer, you should delete all the temporary files and your Internet history.

1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.

2. On the General tab, under Temporary Internet files, click Delete Files, and then click Delete Cookies.

3. Under History, click Clear History.

To delete other files saved by corporate portals, such as Sharepoint Portal Server

If you're using a corporate Web site that allows you to view internal corporate documents, you may be inadvertently storing sensitive documents on the public computer.

1. Delete all the files in the temporary folder of your user account which you can find by browsing to

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp.

2. If your company uses Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server, empty the temporary folder (My Documents\SharePoint Drafts).
Watch for over-the-shoulder snoops. When you use a public computer, be on the look out for thieves who look over your shoulder or watch as you enter sensitive passwords to collect your information.

Don't enter sensitive information into a public computer. These measures provide some protection against casual hackers who use a public computer after you have.

But keep in mind that an industrious thief might have installed sophisticated software on the public computer that records every keystroke and then e-mails that information back to the thief.

Then it doesn't matter if you haven't saved your information or if you've erased your tracks. They still have access to this information.

If you really want to be safe, avoid typing your credit card number or any other financial or otherwise sensitive information into any public computer.
