Hello everyone my name is Jess Buck and I am the 'relatively' new Outreach Development Officer for LINKnet. It is my job to promote the '16-24 Job Ready Project'.
My previous job involved managing a youth development project on Gorgie Farm- a community project. This project offered supported volunteering opportunities to socially excluded young people.
Through my work at the farm I was very keen to increase the participation of black minority ethnic people in Gorgie farm's activities. Through this I came to appreciate the difficulties experienced by BME people trying to integrate into Scottish society.
Since starting in May I have really enjoyed working here. All the staff ,volunteers, mentors and mentees have made me feel very welcome and have been incredibly supportive. I am excited about where LINKnet is going and my future here.
Hello to you all. I am Wakako Yamada Smith (Known as Waki - nickname in this country). I joined LINKnet on 1st June 2006 as a full-time administrator and am the first point of call for all enquiries to the staff.
I got my education (Accountancy and Management) in my native country Japan (Tokyo) and I was a company accountant & company secretary. I came to London for life-broadening experiences and study English in 1997 and came up to Edinburgh as a backpacker in 2000 then married a Scotsman (!) here in Edinburgh.
My first job in the UK was with a voluntary organisation similar to LINKnet. I am very happy with this opportunity using my previous experiences and working with the staff. I am looking forward to offering any help to all mentees and mentors through our staff.
This project is aimed at providing a mentoring service to more school leavers and people approaching graduation. The aim is to prepare people for finding a job or moving into further / higher education.
Through this project various Edinburgh employers whom we have partnerships with carry out induction presentations of their agencies to recruited mentees.
Mentees are then requested to identify one or two potential employers that interest them. Thereafter the mentees are allocated a mentor from the employer of their choice and mentoring starts.
If you would like more information about this project for yourself or a friend please contact jess@linknetmentoring.com or phone (0131)225 6284.
