Opportunities

Volunteer Befriender

As a befriender for adult ethnic minorities, you might help them develop their English skills, accompany them to events and appointments, provide emotional support, and maintain boundaries. By engaging in friendly conversation or providing language lessons, you can boost their confidence in speaking English. Accompanying them can reduce isolation and build a stronger relationship, while providing emotional support can make them feel less alone by setting clear expectations and respecting privacy. 

Experience Required 

Good communication skills, good communication skills, Flexibility and adaptability, Cultural sensitivity and diversity awareness, Time management and reliability, Empathy and compassion. 

Training Details 

We will provide a guideline which can be read and also, we will conduct an online meeting to introduce the volunteer to the role, with continues support during the service when needed.

Flexible 1-3 hours per week

It can be online and/or in person.  

Befrienders and befriendees can meet at LINKnet office, 31 Guthrie Street, Edinburgh, EH1 1JG. It can be also in public places (cafes etc) and never in someone's home. We recommend meeting in a secure location to facilitate a positive and respectful befriending relationship.

IT Mentor Volunteer

Join our dynamic team as an IT Mentor Volunteer and make a positive impact in the lives of others! We are seeking passionate individuals who are committed to dedicating a few hours once a week to mentor and support our community members.

This volunteer position can be remote, or hybrid in Edinburgh

Fundraising Volunteer 

A fantastic ethnic minority charity is looking for enthusiastic minority ethnic volunteers (from all ethnic groups) to join the Fundraising team. You will be part of the team to raise funds to support volunteer mentoring and befriending services. You will be adding value to LINKnet by supporting the Fundraising team and maximizing the efficiency of the fund-raising process through creative thinking, creating fundraising opportunities, carrying out administration duties and networking with key contacts. 

Experience Required 

This opportunity will require someone who has good attention to detail, excellent communication, interpersonal and relationship-building skills, experience of engaging people with social media campaigns, and experience in updating websites and managing social media platforms.

This is a great opportunity to gain work experience and develop your skills in various fields of work as the roles at LINKnet will be varied. Volunteering involves twice a week (5hrs per day). 

Experience Required 

LINKnet is looking for volunteers with good communication skills in English and at least one other ethnic minority language, who can communicate effectively face-to-face, over the telephone and by email, with people at all levels. IT skills and experience of Microsoft Office is preferable. 

Training Details 

Training will cover the concept of volunteering, LINKnet policies and procedures etc.

Project development assistant

LINKnet is looking for minority ethnic volunteers (from all ethnic groups) to become development assistants to support the development team in the evaluation and prioritization of volunteer mentoring and befriending services. Through a range of support structures, the voluntary job is likely to include assisting the development process of various projects, helping in completing all project-related documentation, working with the development team in project initiation. 

Experience Required 

Project development assistant will undertake a range of administration and support tasks. The candidate needs to be adaptable and a team player with good IT skills. The role will require to liaise with partners, staff and volunteers.

Oral Health Volunteer  

Oral Health Volunteer  

LINKnet are looking for volunteers to support paid staff to increase awareness of oral health among ME (minority ethnic) communities by bringing the communities in and delivering oral and wider health improvement messages in an accessible manner. “Edinburgh Smile”, is a project of LINKnet that partners MEHIS (Minority Ethnic Health Inclusion Service)- NHS. The successful candidates will be involved in the development and coordination of activities to raise awareness. 

Experience Required 

LINKnet welcomes volunteers who are interested in oral health. You do not need to be a specialist to support us in improving oral health among minority ethnic communities. Anyone who can assist in oral health awareness raising activities is suitable for this volunteering role. The responsibilities will include assisting LINKnet staff to develop and organize activities, maintain close liaison with community groups, and devise communication. 

Training Details Upon

recruitment, volunteers are given an induction followed by a full training. Throughout the voluntary period a few rounds of skills training will be conducted. Continuous support and supervision will be provided by LINKnet staff.

Mentor Volunteer

Through a range of support structures and services, LINKnet aims to provide a quality experience for volunteer mentors and successful outcomes for mentees. Your commitment as a mentor will be two or three hours per week, spread over a day or two for a few months, not exceeding six months. One to one mentoring is found to be one of the most effective methods of people development. Mentoring is a rewarding, personal gratification experience. 

Experience And Qualities Required 

  • Interest in helping people through transfer of skills/experience.  

  • Years of UK work experience needed. 

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. 

  • Empathetic and understanding nature. 

  • Commitment to dedicating a couple of hours weekly for mentoring activities.

  • Do the research and plan an outreach list   

  • To recruit BME service users (clients), and Providers (example: mentors, volunteers etc..) on to LINKnet’s mentoring programme.  

  • In order to do this, use all possible publicity and promotion methods (including leafleting, one-to-one talks, one-to-group presentations, and distributing LINKnet leaflets at different venues across Edinburgh libraries, community centres, and churches)  

  • Work within Colleges, Universities and Schools in order to influence BME young people to access LINKnet mentoring service.  

  • Under the supervision of RDO do outreach work as appropriate, including visiting career fairs and holding stalls, Etc

  • Identify an event  

  • Decide date, book venue and decide on refreshments etc and how to supply them  

  • Book the event if appropriate  

  • Identify attendees (publicity and promotion)- Event Promotion: promote the event on social media, through email, or by distributing flyers in the community. Sharing information about the event can be done remotely and may not require physical presence 

  • Identify facilitators and book them  

  • Hold event
